The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s Vision for Student Success affords every student in the District every opportunity for success. The District’s accompanying centralized fundraising policy, designed to fund the Vision for Student Success, entered its first year of full implementation in 2013-14, increasing the Foundation’s annual fundraising goal from less than $400,000 to $4 million per year, every year.
APG has worked with the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation since April 2012 to create a comprehensive fundraising plan, develop new staff positions and recruit advancement professionals, provide ongoing training and mentoring to staff and board members, enhance Foundation communication and marketing efforts, develop media and public relations efforts, and strategize on major gift proposals and corporate partnerships.
In 2012-13, the Foundation completed its largest annual fund campaign in its 30-year history, and also announced what is thought to be the largest gift ever to a public K-12 system in California, a $4.8 million bequest from the Peggy Bergmann Estate. In August 2013, the Foundation received a $500,000 cash gift from the Scott Family Charitable Fund.
By the conclusion of its first centralized fundraising effort on January 31, 2014, SMMEF announced more than $3.2 million raised to benefit students and teachers throughout the 16-school district, and SMMUSD stepped in to provide additional funds to ensure continuation of programs. Efforts are now underway to exceed the $4 million annual goal for 2014-15…and every year thereafter.
